Hey friend,
How are you?
I’m back home after a whirlwind trip to Tuvalu.
4 flights and 24 hours later, I arrived in little Funafuti.
Hopped off the plane, down the steps and onto the tarmac.
Picked up my suitcase from inside the airport, walked out into the hot sun, wheeled it across the street, round the corner, and into my hotel.
That’s how small the Tuvaluan capital of Funafuti is.
Actually, I could see the logo of the Australian High Commission from the plane when we taxied in.
No taxis, no queues, no waiting. Such a nice change of pace.
Despite the close proximity of everything, I still managed to get lost while looking for Sue’s Kitchen, a local fish and chip shop.
I confidently trotted down the wrong street which went on and on and on.
If you look at the picture below, you can see how that might happen.
Funafuti is like one of those jellies that you can pull at either end and they stretch out interminably.
40 minutes later, it occurred to me to check the map and realise I should have been on the parallel street.
Not to worry, it had been a pleasant, though hot, walk observing life in Tuvalu.
Barefoot school kids walking home from school, waving to me from the bus, dogs snoozing in dusty patches of shade, lines of washing hanging from the sides of paint-peeled houses, people sleeping in hammocks or laughing and talking together.
In fact, laughter and jovial conversation was the spirit of Tuvalu.
Such a friendly, chilled place.
I hope you can make it there one day.
